2021 PUSHED US TO
BE MORE ACCEPTING
I have to admit that my Christmas post was somewhat less merry than befits the season. But I can’t let 2021 pass without noting some of the social progress we’ve made, during this second year of pandemic.
Indeed, even while socially distancing, we’ve continued on our trek toward the enlightened goal of inclusiveness — gathering us all in, as it were, fully vaxed and unified in the oneness of cultural, ethnic and sexual acceptance.
For example, acceptance was the theme of an exhibition sponsored by the online Absynthe Gallery, though this particular image leaves us a bit uncertain of what it is we’re expected to accept…
But then we must all step out of our comfort zone from time to time. And so the leftist quarterly, Boston Review, suggested that celebrating kinkiness would help bring us to a future free of racism and homophobia…
For all its moral progressiveness, Boston was overshadowed by Toronto, where even transit posters reminded Canadians how important it is to be proud of their inclinations. O Canada!…
And by no means should anyone feel constrained by spiritual qualms…
But of course, inclusiveness involves ethnic diversity as well. This meme took note of the racism emergency declared by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a situation that seems rather curious, given the diversity present in Chicago’s city government…
But then, true diversity requires that everyone feel included in everything, even to the point of updating our holiday traditions…
It all comes down to intersectionality — that is to say, being sure to recognize the various social identities on account of which we might experience victimization. You can calculate your own intersectionality score by using a handy interactive device available online here…
Although, it must be pointed out that the graphic above overlooks those who feel victimized on the basis of their body characteristics. Not to worry, however, it’s covered…
I realize that society is changing quickly, and it’s a challenge to keep updating our sense of inclusiveness. We can’t know what we’ll be called upon to feel comfortable with next…
Unfortunately, inclusiveness never seems to embrace diversity of opinion…
Given the advances in space commercialization we witnessed this year, the horizons of acceptance are limitless. It’s just a matter of time before some inclusivity advocate raises the ultimate question…
Until then, I intend to follow the advice of whoever created the meme at the top of this column and keep posting.
Have a very happy New Year!

Possible you might feel more comfortable if you stopped being agonizingly uncomfortable with everything that is not the same as yourself.
Prognosis not promising on the mental health front.
