HERE’S THE LAST EXCERPT
FROM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

I hope you’re enjoying these readings from my novel. And I hope they’ll entice you to read the entire book.

I also hope that recent traffic they’ve encouraged can boost the prominence of my humble scribblings on the Net. A little nudge would be helpful.

According to a tracking service called WebStatsDomain.org, this blog comes in at 13,480,399th out of some 30 million domains. Not exactly a world beater.

WebStats Rating

In this age of niche marketing, I guess obscurity is my niche. But then, I don’t think of my readers as few in number, I think of you as elite.

Anyway, here’s the most exciting of these four excerpts — or perhaps it would be better to call it intense. Well, it has conflict, in any event, and I’ve tried to convey that in my oral interpretation.

THIRD OF FOUR EXCERPTS
FROM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

Writers take their titles seriously. You wrack your brain to construct a word combination that’s provocative and captures the spirit and thrust of your book.

And when you finally discover that magic phrase, it becomes part of you.

I think MY BROTHER’S KEEPER is a perfect title for my novel. It capsulizes the essential focus of the story: James’ struggle to protect his brother, as controversy builds around Jesus and his movement.

And it’s Biblical, to boot.

But I have to admit that those words are anything but unique on the current literary scene. There’s a whole bunch of books by that title out there. Here are just a few…

Other MBKs

With confusion ever a possibility, please take care when searching for my book. Hint…

Google: “Bill Kassel My Brother’s Keeper.”

Or follow the links from this blog.

In the meantime, here’s another reading of an excerpt from MY BROTHER’S KEEPER — that is to say, my MY BROTHER’S KEEPER…

ANOTHER EXCERPT FROM
MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

It’s exciting for authors to see their books being promoted. Of course, you can never be certain of the context in which your work appears.

Kobo Facebook PostThis display panel from the online book site, Kobo, showed up recently in my Facebook news feed. It places my novel, MY BROTHER’S KEEPER, next to a book titled “Imperfectly,” by a writer named Coleen Masters.

Apparently that book is the ninth in a series of action romances, and a snip from its promotional copy offers the following…

“Kelly Rodgers [the book’s heroine] may be young, smart, and headstrong, but she’s no match for a biker badass like Leo. She’s never met anyone like him, he’s the worst thing to happen to her and as much as she hates to admit it…she finds him irresistible.”

Yes…well… I’m sure Leo draws Kelly into all kinds of fascinating adventures. One wonders, however, just what marketing strategy would place “Imperfectly” next to a religious/historical novel about the family of Jesus.

But then, that’s the publishing business.

And who knows how these high-tech online marketing systems work anyway?

I’ll just keep on doing my own promotional thing. So here’s my reading of a second excerpt from MY BROTHER’S KEEPER — in which Mary tells Joseph how she had been visited by a messenger of God while Joseph was away obtaining materials for a construction project…

HERE’S AN EXCERPT FROM
MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

Electronic publishing is rather ephemeral. At least it seems so to me. I’m working real hard to figure out how to market an eBook. And it ain’t easy.

MBK CoverFor instance, how can you do a book signing with nothing to write your name on? I’m told there’s software that allows you to personalize a Kindle file, but I don’t see how it might work.

Well, the one thing I can do is read from the text. Whether rendered in ink on paper or pixels on a screen, words come alive when you hear them interpreted aloud.

So here’s li’l’-ol’-me reading the first of four excerpts from my novel, MY BROTHER’S KEEPER.

This should give you a taste of the book, and (one hopes) make you want to read the whole thing.

From the first chapter — Joachim, father of Mary, visits the home of Joseph with the temple priest Zacharias. They recount Mary’s experience as a servant in the temple, and prepare to ask a favor…

MY RECENT INTERVIEW
ON AVE MARIA RADIO

Kresta in the PM LogoA couple of weeks ago I was interviewed on “Kresta in the Afternoon” by my old Ave Maria Radio colleague, Al Kresta. Here’s an audio track of that discussion…

https://www.billkassel.com/wp-content/uploads/Interview-Kresta-In-the-Afternoon.mp3

It was fun being on the air again, something I don’t get to do very often these days. And — even better — it was great to introduce my new novel, MY BROTHER’S KEEPER, to listeners of the more than 300 stations that carry “Kresta in the Afternoon,” AMR’s flagship daily talk show.

Give it a listen, and get back to me with your thoughts.

The Virtues of St. Joseph

JESUS’ FOSTER FATHER AS
A TIMELESS ROLE MODEL

Reni's St. JosephOur extended family was enlarged last week when my wife’s niece, Jessica, gave birth to a baby girl.

This occasion brought to our in-box the requisite photo of grandparents, Chris and Joe, framing their daughter reclining in hospital bed with little Emily Anne in her arms.

Jessie bore the classic new-mother expression that blends joy with exhaustion (it was a long labor). Chris’ and Joe’s faces were all pride.

I was particularly struck by the image of Joe, who is considerably older than Chris and struggling with severe health complications. The family prayer during those months of Jessie’s pregnancy had been that Joe might live to see his grandchild.

Praise God, he made it.

Joe’s birthday is March 19, which on the liturgical calendar is the feast day of St. Joseph, for whom he was named. His patron saint also receives recognition on May 1, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, which was established in 1955 by Pope Pius XII to provide a Christian alternative to the May Day labor celebrations promoted worldwide by the Soviet Union and the Communist Internationale.

THE JOURNAL STUBBORN THINGS
HIGHLIGHTS MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

MBK CoverStubborn Things, a popular online journal to which I’ve contributed several articles, has posted a review of my new novel, MY BROTHER’S KEEPER.

The piece is by Diane Osbourne, a lay religious education instructor who has a deep love and extensive knowledge of Holy Scripture. For many years Diane has conducted adult Bible study classes at St. Anthony Parish in Hillsdale, Michigan, developing her own curricula and instructional materials. She very kindly provided advice when I was writing my book.

Here are her complimentary reflections…

THE WOMEN’S ANGLE
ON MY NEW NOVEL

Simply Hers CoverI was delighted to find that Nancy Ryan, book reviewer for Simply Hers, a regional women’s magazine covering south-central Michigan, fairly bubbles with enthusiasm for MY BROTHER’S KEEPER, which she describes as…

“a book of history, and, yes, entertainment. Even though we all know how it will end, I can’t put it down! It’s one of those stories you find yourself thinking of when you go about your daily routine.

“The author has matched the biblical account with historical writings from the first three centuries. He used Bible lore and writings of the early Christian period, including ‘gospels and testaments’ not contained in the sanctioned Bible.”

Nancy explains that the story is “told through the eyes of James, the older half-brother of Jesus,” and quotes my author’s reflection at the back of the book in which I note that my goal is…

My Brother’s Keeper — Comments from Readers…

From the opening words of Bill Kassel’s novel we are drawn into the complex and colorful world of first century Israel. The reader is caught up in the drama of Christ through the eyes of Jesus’ natural family. Kassel’s work is unconventional, exciting and controversial, offering fresh insights and inspiration for believers and non believers alike.
—Fr. Dwight Longenecker
Blogger and Author

My Brother’s Keeper was, for me, a most gratifying reading experience. The book is beautifully written. And even with my limited early Christian history knowledge, I could tell that it had been exhaustively researched. I consider it a significant literary achievement. It was a privilege to read it.
—Gordon Boardman

It makes the Gospels come alive in a new way. I loved it.

This was a fascinating book! It was not what I thought it was going to be. I thought the main character, James the Just, was going to turn out to be one of Jesus’ Apostles and the book would describe what it was like to spread the Good News. Instead, it came from the perspective of a family member who was not 100% sure that Jesus was the Messiah. Not only that: James the Just had a sort of friendship with Pontius Pilate. The entire book put you in the Holy Land while Jesus walked. It was a fascinating read. I would recommend it, and already have!

Good Reads

Bill Kassel has taken a very different approach to the Christian story. His is not the conventional Christmas card portrait of the Holy Family. Rather, he has delved deeply into the earliest writings in Church Tradition and offered some compelling suppositions about what was going on around Jesus and how the people closest to him might have been effected by it. He has crafted a plot that’s engaging to the modern reader and, surprisingly, doesn’t contradict Scripture.”

If I lived in the time of Jesus, who would I think He was? What would I have believed about Him? Would I have espoused His teachings? It wasn’t like being raised Catholic in the 20th century. My Brother’s Keeper made me realize in a fresh new way how hard it was, in Jesus’ time, for many people — especially Jews — to believe in Jesus and how amazing His mission really was.
—Cheryl Nael
Ave Maria Radio

This book is one of my favorites. My Brother’s Keeper, from page one, invites you to go deeper into the daily life and time of Christ. Most of us are very familiar with the scriptures that give us an account of his life. This book takes you to a personal level that creates a very real image of not only the people but how Christ’s relationships and decisions created a life outside of themselves. How Jesus related to his family, and how his family saw him, bring a very realistic aspect to his life, and created the beginnings of a more personal understanding of Christ in my own life.
—Chris Hoyt

Well worth reading. Kassel Takes Biblical facts, Historic facts, Jewish facts and traditions, and weaves them into a compelling narrative. The dialogue is believable and enlightening. You really feel like you are there it is so well written and believable. I honestly couldn’t put it down even though I know the end as the Bible tells it. Kassel captures the emotions of the characters and they are believable. A very compelling and enjoyable read.

Bill Kassel has created a vivid landscape for his characters that can be clearly seen felt and almost touched. The Interaction between the characters is understated and dutiful with silent respect. The reader can almost hear their thoughts in humble reverential tones. The relationships between the characters comes across as genuine and the narrative moves along smoothly. And the storyline in engaging. All in all a very good read.

The subject matter and historical period are interesting to me so I find this a good read. I am Catholic but I think the book would be of interest to any Christian who would like to read a fictionalized rendering of what life might have been like for Jesus’ brother, James.

Read this book. ’Tis a very interesting speculation about the family of Joseph, James and Jesus as the Jewish foundation to the Catholic faith.

Bill Kassel explores the impact Jesus’s birth and ministry had on his family, specifically Joseph and Joseph’s son James. Diligent research vividly describes the geography of the region and portrays the culture and politics of Judaism at that time. Not the typical retelling of the story of Jesus. Kassel poses questions that challenge the reader to rethink basic premises and meditate on new perspectives and their impact on the reader.

Reading “My Brother’s Keeper” is like being part of the part of the crowd at the crucifixion. Mr. Kassel transports you into the Word. I was there and understood the life of Jesus and his family situation.
I am a Protestant, and there are a few things I can’t agree with, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book and Mr. Kassel’s grasp of the English language. I was there with my Savior.
—Gail Gioia
Upper Black Eddy, PA

Kassel relates the life and ministry of the Savior of the world through an inspired, historical, and personable lens… His faith, research, and talent shine through the portrayals of the characters James the Just, Simon Peter, Joseph of Arimathea, Mary the Mother of our Lord, Pontius Pilate, and various others. I commend his authorship and recommend “My Brother’s Keeper” to any seeking to kindle a love for those who shared in the Master’s mortal life and ancient Israel. Kassel adheres to the biblical accounts of Christ’s life, expounding with full creative license potential causes, emotions, and situations that might have occurred among the ancient Jews. I pray that you enjoy the story of James the Just, and join him in discovering a greater love for the Son of God, and our fellow men.
